Chasuble Vestment Kasel Messgewand

The chasuble is made of two different red silk fabrics. The main damask fabric is a paler red and has a scrolling leaf design. The slightly darker red fabric of the orphreys is unpatterned, but it is heavily decorated with images in tapestry and embroidery. At the center of the back orphrey is St. Anne with the child Mary at her knee. On the front orphrey are the images of four saints. The figure on the lower right appears to be St. Clare holding a Gothic monstrance, so the lower left figure may be St. There is a male saint at the upper left holding a book and what appears to be a female saint holding a narrow object at the upper right. The figures on both front and back are surrounded by embroidered and silk flowers in a variety of colors. The figures are highlighted with gold metallic thread. The chasuble is trimmed in metallic gold banding. The piece is lined with coarse buckram fabric. This chasuble is hand stitched. It would make a beautiful display piece for the antique vestment or fabric collector. The chasuble measures 43.5 inches from the top of the shoulder to the back lower hem and 26 inches wide in the back. The antique fabric has rubbing wear and small tears, mostly on the rear orphrey. There are considerable losses to the tapestry and embroidery threads on the back, and some losses on the front. The metallic gold trim and buckram lining fabric are intact. There is some soiling. There are only remnants of the tying cords. Please look at photos carefully. I try very hard to accurately describe my items.
