ANTIQUE OR VINTAGE CATHOLIC CHURCH VESTMENT, CHASUBLE, STOLE, IVORY WITH GOLD FLORAL DAMASK, VERY ORNATE EMBROIDERY WIDE BANDS, STOLE HAS GOLD METALLIC FRINGE, FROM A CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS ORDER, QUITE A BIT OF DAMAGE TO EMBROIDERY BUT STILL ATTRACTIVE. Note – The main issue with this vestment is that the wide embroidered band has some gold cords that were applied loosely to the very top in the making, some sections of this cord have been removed other sections are loose, these top single gold cords need to all be removed, it comes off easily and does not impact the integrity of the decorative band, just some tedious work. Age – mid 20th Century. Size – approximately – Chasuble 41″H x 27″W. Condition – Chasuble background has a small iron scorch spot back, lots of loose threads see description of issue above and photos, Stole fringe missing some tassels both sides. Please ask questions, we want you to be happy, sorry I don’t have access to source information.

The ecclesiastical garb first became peculiar in a strict sense when, under the influence of the migration of the Germanic tribes, the costumes as well as the forms of the ancient world passed away and the more convenient medieval dress was substituted, while the Church (and for a longer or shorter period, the upper classes and the higher officials also) clung to Roman or Greek fashions. Under the influence of the discovery by the liturgists of a supposed connection of the liturgical costume with that of Old Testament worship, and then through the effect of custom and of the fashions of the beginning of the Middle Ages, a development was initiated, which did not indeed do away with the traditional usage, but transformed it more or less.
